Description
The Kinabatangan River is one of the last refuges of the Bornean orangutan. Its riparian forest banks concentrate more species of primates per square kilometer than any other ecosystem on the planet. Navigating it in a small boat, at dawn or dusk, is one of those experiences that are not sought: they are found.
An expert naturalist accompanies each outing. They know the movement patterns of the animals, the spots where orangutans come down to the banks, and the stretches where pygmy elephants cross the river in groups. There are no guarantees in the wild, but there is knowledge, and that knowledge makes the difference between seeing a river and reading an ecosystem.
What you can find:
Each outing is different. These are the inhabitants of the Kinabatangan:
- Bornean orangutan the great red-haired primate, critically endangered, visible in the treetops of the riverbanks.
- Bornean pygmy elephant the smallest subspecies in the world, endemic to Sabah; crosses the river in family herds.
- Proboscis monkey endemic to Borneo, unmistakable for its prominent nose and swimming ability.
- Crab-eating macaque the most common primate on the banks; agile, noisy, and ubiquitous.
- Saltwater crocodile the largest reptile in the world, visible on sandbanks at sunset.
- Tropical birds kingfishers, rhinoceros hornbills, and great egrets among the most common species.
